Course Description

An intense course designed for those want to develop progressive photographic, fashion and creative make-up techniques, and ideal for those who have previous make-up experience. The course explores the more advanced areas of make-up artistry covering; Photographic Beauty & Editorial, Lighting and Black & White Photography, Historical Make-up Artistry, Avant-garde and Face & Body Art. The course will also help you to think like a make-up designer and understand how briefs for jobs should be researched and executed. The course will conclude with a professional photographer and model photo shoot, providing you with a professional image to kick start your portfolio building. 

The course is taught by practicing industry freelancers, you will learn the most current and up-to-date techniques, which will enable you to go out into the industry confident in your skills and ability. The course goes beyond practical and theoretical techniques and explores all components of creativity and the dynamics of design through research and reference. A comprehensive understanding of essential business skills and the industry will enable learners to feel confident when starting their own freelance career.

Upon successful completion of the course, learners can continue to study other MASA units to work towards the MASA Diploma in Fashion & Media Make-up Artistry with Hairstyling.

Week 1: Photographic (I)

  • Editorial beauty
  • Exploring textures - Creams / Tints / Gloss
  • Product knowledge & performance
  • Kit essentials
  • Male grooming 

Week 2: Photographic (II)

  • Photographer styles & understanding lighting – Colour / B&W
  • Exploring textures, shapes and metallic colours in powders & pigments
  • Product knowledge & performance
  •  Body makeup for beauty / fashion editorial

Week 3 – 5: Historical Make-Up Influences on Fashion Make-up Design

Understanding key looks (shapes / colours and textures) through the decades:
  • 18th Century, ‘20’s, ‘30’s, ‘40’s, ‘50’s, ‘60’s, ‘70’s, ‘80’s, ‘90’s
  • Understanding how the past influences the future in fashion make-up design – Explore current fashion designer shows and makeup artist creations 

Week 6: Avant-garde Make-up Artistry (I)

  • Colour mixing & Customisation 
  • Product knowledge and performance 

Week 7: Avant-garde Make-up Artistry (II)

  • Make-up Artist Research
  • Creative & experimental application 
  • Metallics & embellishment
  • Product knowledge and performance 

Week 8 – Face / Body Art Make-up Techniques

  • Global Influences
  • Aquacolor
  • Supracolour
  • Product / tool knowledge and performance

Week 9: Fashion Project

  • Intro the role of the Make-up Designer – Brief / Research / Reference / Design
  • Plan, prepare and execute a fashion high fashion editorial look complete with fashion styling

Week 10: PRO Photo Shoot

  • Gain experience on a photographic shoot, working with a professional photographer and model
  • Design a makeup look that adheres to a brief, and communicate ideas effectively to other members of the team
  • One to One lecturer feedback

Upon successful completion, students can continue to study other units to work towards the MASA Diploma including:

  • Dressing Hair
  • Special FX
  • Face / Body Art
  • Airbrushing

There is no formal assessment on the course, however students will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence which will be handed in on the last day of the course. Students will receive the following certificate upon completion:

  • LSBM Certificate in Fashion & Photographic Make-up Artistry (endorsed by MASA)

  • Foundation VTCT Level 2 or MASA Award in Make-up Principles or course equivalent
