In Asian weddings, the bride’s makeup is all about making her feel special and the center of attention and is an incredibly prominent celebration during people’s lives in South Asia.
India weddings are extravagant celebrations where the whole ceremony can last from a few minutes to several days depending on the individuals’ religion and which region they are from within the country.
The bride and her bridal party will spend copious hours getting traditional henna (semi-permanent plant dye which comes out reddish-brown to black) painted on their hands and arms with elaborate, intricate, beautiful designs which called 'mehndi'.
Because the process can take hours, mostly due to the time for the henna pigment to dry. This is usually a time where the bridal party celebrates together (almost like a hen party in British culture).
The bride’s outfit
Different regions have their own variation of the style their brides will wear on their wedding day that reflects their culture.
At Indian weddings, traditionally the bride wears red and gold. She will also be adorned with gold jewellery which is symbolic of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, and her blessings of wealth and prosperity.
The bride’s hair
A bride would wear the dupatta which is a shawl-like scarf the bride wears over their hair and body. On the course, we will teach you how to style the hair for the perfect dupatta setting.
The bride’s makeup
Elegance and extravagance are the aims of the bride’s final look for the ceremony to celebrate the union between her and the groom. Makeup is a way of enhancing a woman’s appearance and beauty, which is especially of importance for her big day.
The makeup looks for South Asian brides are often glamourous to make them appear as royalty. A lot of focus is on giving the eyes a captivating effect. Kohl liner is used to make them stand out and attract attention - intense makeup looks add more glamour to the bride’s wedding look. Bold red lips are also popular as they leave a statement that compliments the colour of the decorative clothing worn by the bride.
During the day, countless photos are taken of memories that last a lifetime. So, in any makeup artist’s career, it is one of the most important occasions where her work matters the most.
