How to Choose the Right Course for Your New Beauty Career

These days, more people are opting to pursue a career in the beauty industry. This comes as no surprise to CIDESCO who found in a newly released study, that 88% of Irish school leavers aged 17-19 ranked going into beauty as their top interest over other hobbies such as music (79%), fashion (71%), exercise (39%) and cooking (34%).This is further reflected in how they decide on their careers with approximately half of participants (42%) stating that they would consider working in beauty.

Working in the beauty industry gives you a range of exciting avenues to explore. You can run your very own nail station at a salon and have your very own clients proudly wear your stunning signature designs on their nails.  Or you can even open your own aesthetics clinic or work as a beauty therapist on a cruise ship! The possibilities are endless when you decide to go for a career in the beauty world. Choosing the right course and place to study is incredibly important to be successful in your newly found beauty career. It can be rather overwhelming, this is why we’ve created a guide to help you make the best decision for you and your beauty career.

Michelle Caheny, Director at Spa and Beauty Connection Ltd and Senior Beauty Recruitment Consultant and advises “In-depth research should be made on the type of roles you can get and what career pathway you should lead. You need to question are you prepared to work unsociable hours and weekends? Success in the beauty industry takes hard work and resilience as well as commitment.

In recent years, we have noticed that a lot of students come out of college wanting to specialise in one area such as facials and skincare and doing NVQ units just in that area! However, this should be avoided! After all, doctors come out of training and can’t become brain surgeons straight away – you still need to understand that you need to leave college armed with NVQ Level 2 and 3 or equivalent and be prepared to do every treatment (even if you don’t like it ) just to gain knowledge and experience!

Join a company that is going to train you in the best product houses and treatments! My clients are looking for staff firstly with a good attitude and work ethic! Always remember that your first job is not for life but a stepping stone to a career you eventually want. A big part of your career is also sales and retailing – upselling treatments and rebooking clients.”

At the London School of Beauty and Make-up, we develop the best talent with our expansive range of makeup and beauty courses that develop students to be fully equipped and ready for the salon floor. This is enhanced by the fact that we are the only beauty school in the capital known to have their very own salon on site where students can gain experience of what it’s like to work in a fully operating salon open to the public by working on placement whilst studying.
