As we all know, we’ve had a non-existent summer in the UK due to the weather and the ongoing COVID situation. This summer, we also experienced a lack of sunshine despite us finally being allowed out and socialising with loved ones, in true UK fashion. Travel restrictions are still in place, so the opportunity to get away to a hotter climate remains limited. All of these various factors for many of us has meant no natural tan bronzed skin!

We’ve been so sad about this, we decided to enlist our makeup tutor’s advice for achieving beautiful bronze skin without sun. Read on to find her tips for achieving glowy bronzed skin from the comfort of your home.

Tips for Bronzed Skin

If you want to get that bronzed look, it is better to start with a good base. When the skin is well taken care of, you are more likely to achieve that glamorous glowy bronzed skin.

Exfoliating weekly will help with the appearance and texture of the skin. Well-hydrated skin both from the inside and the outside is just as important too. Once the canvas is well taken care of, here are some tips that can help anyone get that lovely bronzed summer look:

Choose the Right Colour for your Bronzer:

With shade matching, the general rule of thumb with choosing a shade for bronzer is one or two shades darker than the natural skin tone. Something to consider with bronzer is similar to foundation bronzers come with undertones too. For example, if someone has very fair skin, a peach or pink undertone is best. Someone with olive skin, a copper undertone is best. For those with darker skin, a deeper bronzer is best to make the skin look like it has naturally tanned.

Avoid orange bronzer shades if it’s a natural look that you’re aiming for. Also account for skin colour differences in winter and summer by having two bronzer shades on standby.

Bronzer Type Makes a Difference to the Outcome of Bronzed Skin:

The type of bronzer you use will make a difference to the final outcome. Different bronzers offer different finishes that can draw attention to texture or pores. Picking a bronzer is not just as simple as choosing a shade and finish. You should decide on the bronzer’s finish based on your skin type.

Cream/gel-based bronzers are better for dry skin, and powder is better for oily skin. Powder bronzer is the most common due to the ease of applying powder, but cream bronzer is great for those who prefer a glowy finish.

Applying your Bronzer Correctly:

How you apply your bronzer will determine the outcome of your bronzed skin.

The more common way of applying bronzer is by sweeping it across the contours of the face, such as; cheekbones and the bridge of the nose for a more natural bronze look. Another way to apply is around the eyes instead of eyeshadow. Some people do not like too much colour around their eyes, so bronzer is used to add some warmth and depth to the eyelid. It can either be used all over the eyelid or be used as a part of a smokey eye look.

Increase Radiance for Natural-Looking Bronzed Skin:

To ensure that the bronzer looks more natural, there needs to be a contrast on the face for the look to stand out. Adding translucent powder across the temples and cheekbones can help bring out better bronze tones. This contrast will also create more contrast across the face and bring out the highlights of the face.

Apply your Bronzer according to Your Face Shape:

Not all face shapes should apply their bronzer in the same way, otherwise the opportunity to accentuate the contours of the face is missed.

On a heart-shaped face, the widest part of the face is the forehead. Bronzer should be applied on the temple and just above the hollow of the cheek. Whereas those with a square face have a sharper jawline so applying bronzer in a “W” formation from the apples of the cheeks to the bridge of the nose is better. The “W” application mimics where sunlight naturally hits the face.

Similar to square-shaped faces, rectangle-shaped faces also come with a sharp jawline. For natural-looking bronzed skin, the bronzer is applied on the top of the cheekbones, the tip of the chin and across the hairline. Oval shaped faces should lightly dust bronzer on the apple of their cheeks and blend some bronzer into the hairline for a natural tan look. Finally, with a rounded face shape, the widest part of the face is the cheekbones. The best way to apply bronzer is starting with the apples of the cheeks, then sweep it up and out onto the temples and close to the hairline.

The beauty industry continues to grow as more and more companies develop products that suit more specific needs. It’s not only companies but influencers that also share their personal skincare experiences. It is not the products that go on the skin that can heavily impact skin health, it’s a collection of habits that can aid the skincare journey.

Cleanse your Skin Twice a Day

It is essential to wash your face twice a day. The skin is the largest organ in the body and provides defences against pollution, dirt and other foreign objects from entering the body. All of these factors cause build up in the pores and can lead to skin reacting negatively, such as enlarged pores, spots or breakouts.

After a long day of working, studying or even day to day life, the skin has been protecting the body from all sorts of pollution and free radicals. The second cleanse, according to some scientists is more important as the skin is exposed to more pollution for longer.

If your skin is not cleansed, you’re going to bed with everything the skin has been exposed to that day, sitting on your face. It helps to leave the skin as a clean slate for applying serums and moisturisers. Facial cleansing is a big part of maintaining healthy skin, especially for makeup wearers.

Your Insides are Just as Important as Your Outside

As the skincare market witnesses growth, many consumers are more aware of what they should be using their skin type. However, no amount of skincare alone can improve the appearance and health of the skin, it also boils down to diet.

Drinking water makes a huge difference as the cells in the body is made up of mostly water. Water plays a critical role in keeping balance in the skin. When skin is well hydrated, the appearance is more radiant, and pores are less visible. Diet is also just as important as drinking water. Foods rich with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals can help keep wrinkles away, neutralize free radicals, protect skin from sun damage & pollution. Consuming lots of sugary foods and drinks can impact how much skin breaks out. By cutting down on these types of food can make a big difference. Similar to salty food, sodium is responsible for water retention which can lead to puffiness around the eyes.

Manage Stress and Sleep Well

This one is easier said than done, but how much stress and sleep a person has can negatively impact the skin. When someone is stressed, the body releases a hormone called cortisol which can cause sebum production to increase which can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts. Not only that, stress can exacerbate other skin inflammatory conditions such as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis and many more. Stress can also appear on the skin as rashes and hives.

Moving onto sleep, an average adult should be getting at least 7 hours of sleep. This gives the body time to regenerate new skin cells and repair damaged ones. Normally, the first sign of sleep deprivation shows around the eyes as dark circles or sagging skin. The benefits of sleep are far more than just the skin; it helps the overall health of the body and lets the body be able to function at its optimal state.

Check the Ingredients and Expiration Date of the Products You Buy

In recent years, there has been a huge emphasis on organic skincare products and ingredients. The whole skincare industry is not regulated as much as people think. Labels can say organic but this might not be entirely true, especially if the products are formulated by people who are not properly certified. Most products have a shelf life label on them, to let the consumer know how long it can be used safely after it has opened. There are a few websites that have access to a large skincare database to help consumers know when the products were made and when they actually expire if the information is not available. But due to the skincare industry not being as regulated not all products are available to check but there are still many that can be.

Preparing for a holiday can be stressful and take a toll on the body. From tiredness, irritability, anxiety and so much more. Physically the body goes through quite a bit as well, due to the change of environment. This is why hydration is essential as this helps the body function as normal and prevents breakouts from happening.

Why Does your Skin Get Dry When Travelling?

Travelling especially on a plane can take a lot out of the body, including moisture. Humidity has a big role in this. Humidity is the amount of evaporated water that is currently in the air. The percentage can change depending on weather conditions in different countries. The World Health Organisation (WHO)  has stated that the average humidity in homes is at 30%, whilst on a plane, it is normally lower than 20%.

Low humidity can be responsible for different types of discomfort in the body. Eyes rely on a moisturising tear barrier to be able to function properly. Dry eyes can come with a scratching burning sensation and cause sensitivity to light, blurry vision and red eyes. In a low humidity environment, the eyes create the normal tear barrier but the water evaporates quickly. Plus,  someone who is watching some form of a screen on a plane, whether television or phone, is more likely to blink less often. Blinking helps to distribute the moisture around the eyeball.

Similarly, with the mouth and nose lack of humidity causes dehydration. Like the eyes, both areas suffer from water evaporating quickly in environments with low humidity. Also, people tend to drink less whilst on a plane for two main reasons. The first one being when the beverage cart comes around to them and the second being people trying to avoid frequent trips to the toilet on the flight. By drinking less water, actually worsens the dry mouth and nose. The same goes for skin as well, as hydration starts internally. When the skin is not properly hydrated, this causes the skin to be more prone to breakouts.

How To Prepare Your Skin For Travel All The Dos And Donts That Will Stop You From Having Dry Skin

Tips for Preparing to Fly

Staying hydrated:

Hydration starts from inside the body and affects everything. Before flying, it is ideal to hydrate as normal and continue to stay hydrated whilst on the fly. Using skin care products helps to seal in moisture for the skin but it is important to drink water to keep the body hydrated.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol:

It is important to hydrate the body with water mainly instead of caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. The main reason these types of beverages have diuretic properties, which means the drinks will make the kidneys produce more urine, resulting in more trips to the toilet. Also, the plane environment is doing the opposite of hydrating, so this will dehydrate the body even further. This also means that it will take even more fluid to rehydrate the body.

Moisturising:

Wearing a thicker moisturiser whilst travelling can help the skin stay moisturised for longer. Moisturisers that have olive or jojoba oil, lactic or hyaluronic acid and glycerin are very good for moisturizing the skin. Reapplying mid-flight is also another way to keep the skin hydrated but it is important to be hydrated before the travelling process starts.

Do not forget to wear sunscreen even on the plane:

A plane is 10,000 feet closer to the sun, so this increases the chances of sunburn whilst travelling. Numerous studies have shown that there is a high probability of flight attendants and pilots getting skin cancer. Someone who is sitting next to the window seat could close their blind but this person cannot control the actions of others, so it is better to be safe than sorry.

Keep skincare routine as close to normal as possible:

It is tempting to use the free products that are given whilst travelling, but the majority of these products are generic skincare and will suit someone who has normal skin that is not prone to many common skin issues. But for people who have dry, oily, sensitive or combination skin, this can do the opposite and cause the skin to break out. It is worth getting some travel-sized bottles and using skincare products that have actively worked for the person before they travelled. Another useful tip is labelling each bottle so that skincare can be used both correctly and in the correct order.

Avoid drying habits:

Some people want to look their best whilst travelling but some habits are quite drying and do the skin no favours at all. Such habits like long-lasting makeup products, makeup wipes and face mists actually do the reverse. With long-lasting makeup products and makeup wipes, they both suck out more moisture out of the skin. Then with a facial mist, because the mist is just water on the skin, it evaporates quicker off the skin, especially in an environment that lacks moisture.

Opt for glasses instead of contacts:

When flying, it is a better option to not wear contacts if possible. In normal circumstances, contact lenses can interfere with the tear barrier and make the eyes drier as they block oxygen from getting to the eye. Additionally, it is a foreign object to the body, which the body may not accept naturally. Another reason not to wear contact lenses whilst flying, when travelling for long periods of time, people tend to fall asleep and this will further dry out eyes, especially in an environment with low humidity. If wearing glasses is not an option, carrying eye drops can be really helpful, but it might not relieve redness within the eye.

Saline nasal spray:

This spray can help add moisture to the nasal passages whilst in the cabin of the plane if the nose feels uncomfortably dry.

As technology advances in all aspects of our lives, it’s no surprise that it has also rapidly improved in the facial and skincare industry! Not only are companies benefiting from technology to offer customers long-lasting and skin changing treatments, as seen in the laser industry. Customers are also benefiting from AI technology that allows them to try products and colours in the comfort of their homes.

The facial industry has greatly benefited from Facial and Skincare Technology advancements. Now products combined with technology penetrate the skin deeper and problem trouble areas. Facial technology has been credited for reducing fine lines and wrinkles, diminishing dark spots and treating acne scars. A few Facial and Skincare technology products that can be credited include:

All of the mentioned treatments, we will discuss further in this blog and explain how they work. So without further ado, let’s get started on Facial and Skincare Technology!

Facials that incorporate Facial and Skincare Technology

Microcurrent

Better known as a non-surgical facelift.

Before the beauty industry discovered the wonders of microcurrent, it was a medical practice. Microcurrent was used to help treat facial paralysis, wound healing, stroke and pain management. As far as facial technology goes, it is now also used to offer non-surgical facial lifts.

Microcurrent facials use low voltage electricity to imitate the body’s natural electrical impulses. The treatment encourages more production of adenosine triphosphate. A natural compound responsible for muscle contraction, nerve impulses and many other processes in the body cells.

The brain sends impulses through the spinal column and soft tissues to regenerate cells. As people age, this process becomes slower. Microcurrent facials help prevent or correct client insecurities such as sagging muscles, fine line/wrinkles and so on. It can give the skin a more youthful appearance, tighten and reduce the size of pores, improve the skin’s colour and texture, tone areas that are flabby or sunken and the list of benefits continues.

While the treatment includes the use of electricity, it is pain-free.

Faradic

The faradic facial treatment tones muscles through passive exercise. The faradic machine contracts the client’s facial muscles whilst they just lay on the bed. The machine can be considerably intense as it concentrates on one area of the body. The pain is similar to that felt after an intense workout, so it’s manageable.

The treatment starts with conduction pads strapped to the face or body. A low faradic current is delivered through the pads to the skin and muscles to stimulate muscle contraction. The contractions happen in regular intervals as determined by the beauty therapist. Depending on the treatment use of the faradic treatment, the pulse is adjusted accordingly. One of the main benefits of faradic muscle stimulation facial and skincare technology is cell regeneration. The benefits are evident through the contours of the muscles and the appearance of muscle through the skin. The muscles contract causing more blood flow which also improves lymphatic flow, this can help metabolism, weight loss and cellulite.

High Frequency

(Direct and Indirect)

High frequency is a facial and skincare technology treatment that treats a lot of different skin concerns. These include acne, enlarged pores, fine lines/wrinkles and puffy or dark eyes. High frequency dates back to the 1800s, used to treat bacterial infections like strep throat. Nowadays, you will find it in luxury spas and professional beauty salons. The high-frequency machine produces frequencies between 100,000 to 250,000 hertz. The moving current makes the machine itself quite noisy, especially to a nervous client. It is the job of the beauty therapist to put the client’s mind at ease.

The high-frequency machine is applied both directly and indirectly. When used indirectly, the client holds an intensified saturator electrode in their hand. The therapist conducting the treatment will massage their face with their hands, encouraging the flow of current. The procedure creates heat in the fingertips allowing for a deeper and warmer massage.

There are many benefits the client gets from having an indirect high frequency, such as better circulation and improved metabolism. The client’s skin will also retain moisture better and have relaxed facial muscles. Indirect high frequency focuses on the inside of the body whereas, direct high frequency helps more with aesthetics. Direct high frequency uses glass electrodes that make contact with the client’s skin. The contact is what disperses the current through the client. The electrode moves the concentration of the current around the client’s face or body. The benefits from direct high frequency such as improving skin texture, moisture balance within the skin, increases metabolism and aids healing after extractions are done. Similar to indirect high frequency, direct high frequency can also calm sensory nerve endings.

Vacuum Suction

(Lymphatic Drainage)

Vacuum suction is a very effective and gentle skincare treatment that helps and improves lymphatic drainage. This can be performed on the face and body. After a course of a few treatments, the appearance of the skin can be noticeably better. People who have medical conditions like lymphedema, fibromyalgia, insomnia and so on.

The lymphatic system in the body is responsible for removing waste and toxins from the muscle tissues. The lymphatic system is reliant on movement to get fluids to the lymph vessels. Lymphatic massage can reduce swelling in the body and improve circulation. The treatment is performed with a compressor but there is no actual electrical current flowing through the body. The machine uses pump action to create a vacuum in the cup (or ventouse) which is attached to the machine through the tubing.  The majority of vacuum suction machines have three features: the on/off switch, an intensity control dial to adjust the pressure of the vacuum and a pulsation switch to change the vacuum. With the cup gliding across the skin or using the pulsation method, this helps lymph fluid flow to the nodes to be properly filtered and effectively improve the condition of the skin. A therapist might test the vacuum on the client’s jawline to ensure that the client is suitable for a vacuum treatment.

This treatment has numerous benefits for different skin issues; For normal and combination skin vacuum suction is good for general cleansing. For dry or more mature skin, the suction increases cellular function, circulation and the process of lymphatic vessels getting rid of waste and toxins in the body. Suction also unblocks pores/follicles, removes sebum and blockages that can be caused by incorrect cleansing techniques.

Galvanic

(Desincrustation and Iontophoresis)

The galvanic current is a direct low voltage current that can be used on the face and the body. The machine has a rectifier that controls alternating the current into a direct one, a capacitor, which smoothes out any irregularities in the current and a transformer that decreases the voltage from the main supply of electricity. The client has to hold a covered electrode in their hand, to form a circuit so that the galvanic current travels from the machine to the rollers the therapist is using to massage the face. The therapist will ensure that whatever cream or gel is used is not only suited to the skin type of the client so that it can penetrate the skin.

Two ways are a galvanic current can be used:

  1. Desincrustation – This involves the skin being cleansed deeply and is also used to prepare the skin for iontophoresis.
  2. Iontophoresis – specialised gel or serums are applied to the face using a roller. Thus helps to rebalance and hydrate skin for numerous skin types.  It can also be used for cellulite treatments on the other parts of the body to stimulate lymphatic drainage.

Both treatments can be done separately or together as the galvanic desincrustation needs to be done before galvanic iontophoresis to prepare the skin. Both treatments have many benefits.  Galvanic desincrustation can relax pores which makes getting extractions easier, cleanse the skin deeply, stimulate nerve endings in the face, increase circulation around the face and help exfoliate dead skin cells of the face. Galvanic iontophoresis can improve skin texture, firm muscle tissues and soothes nerve endings.

For the past year and a bit, there has been a new normal globally due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Wearing masks has become a necessity, which we all know makes keeping that flawless base in place. The challenge of making sure that your makeup is not sliding around during the summer months with sweat and sebum encourage slipping.

In today’s blog, we are here to give you some tips from the experts on keeping your makeup in place.

How Your Skincare Can Stop your Makeup Sliding & Last Longer

Applying skin care products in the correct order can prevent makeup from sliding off and lasting longer. This is especially true during the sweaty summer months. The correct order should be:

After this, apply your makeup with a good primer as a basecoat. The primer helps the makeup not clog the skin’s pores. There are lots of different primers out there that can be used based on skin type.

Makeup Tips to Avoid to Stop Makeup Sliding Around

Using the Correct Combination of Products

If your makeup is still rolling or sliding around, then it might be the makeup products you are using. Makeup products are often made from four bases: water, oil, wax and silicone. These bases can’t all mix due to being incompatible. Generally, oil and water are incompatible. The only exception for oil and water would be someone who has oily skin using a water-based foundation, which helps to combat shine on that skin type. Similarly, using a silicone primer and water-based foundation is also a recipe for makeup to slide off the face. The best way to prevent sliding is to keep all makeup bases the same. So for a silicone primer, use a silicone foundation on top. Ensuring that your makeup stays on longer, especially during summer.

Excess Oils Can Cause Your Makeup Sliding Around. By Removing Excess Oils You Can Stop Makeup Sliding Around.

Excess Oils on The Face

Makeup can also shift very easily for a multitude of reasons. Touching the face is a big culprit; leaning on hand when sitting at a desk, rubbing eyes because they are itchy and so on. Also, the fingertips have oil and warmth which contributes to makeup coming off more easily. Excess oils will break down the makeup much faster. Therefore, it is important to remove the excess oils or use specific makeup techniques to combat them. Not blotting the skin, especially if someone has oily skin can make someone appear more shiny and sweaty than they are. Using too much or the wrong makeup products can set off the balance in the skin and cause the skin to create more oil in the face.

Use a Setting or Fixing Spray

For summer, try setting your makeup at different stages in the makeup process, to ensure that it stays in place. The main go-to product is setting spray. But make sure it is the right type of setting as there are two types. The first one melts makeup into one layer, hence the term ‘setting spray’. The second one provides a shield against makeup shifting because of sweat and rubbing and makes makeup look more unified, this is also known as fixing spray. The spray contains polymers that are dissolved into a solvent, normally alcohol. When the setting spray is sprayed on the face, the solvent evaporates, leaving just the polymers. Polymers are long molecules that bind together to form a shield to ensure the makeup does not budge and provides a waterproof barrier. The job of the solvent is to blend the makeup to make it look less powdery, but if too much setting spray is used it will cause the makeup to run. The polymers should be in the first four ingredients of the bottle. The two most common ones are PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) and AMP-acrylates copolymers.

We hope you found these tips helpful and can implement them into having long-lasting and flawless makeup this summer! If you would like some more makeup tips, then check out our previous blogs:

Are you considering to enrol and study at a beauty school in London? If so, you are already one step closer to making the best decision for your career!

In this blog, we will explain the reasons why you should attend a beauty school and enrol on that course you’ve been eyeing up.

The beauty industry continues to grow every year, offering many opportunities to those interested. In order to get these opportunities, we recommend becoming fully qualified. For prospective students, choosing a beauty school is a life-changing decision that will prepare them for a fulfilling career after they have completed their course.

What Will I Study at a Beauty School?

Every beauty school and college offer different approaches to completing courses or modules. Inquiring directly to the beauty school about what training and facilities they offer will help the prospective student make a better-informed decision.

Skin

Students at a beauty school will learn about the skin, anatomy and physiology, facials and facial electrotherapy. A facial and skin care course can teach students the basic knowledge of skincare and other skin related treatments. Studying facial electrotherapy and facial massage & skincare courses are essential to prospective students who want to pursue a career as a facialist. These courses are also an approved stepping stone for those looking to become an aesthetician. Students will learn various skills on how to care for their clients’ skin properly whilst practising their theoretical knowledge.

Nails

Learners interested in pursuing a career in nails can choose to further their understanding through a nail technician qualification. In these courses, students will learn about the anatomy and physiology of nails. Which will help them to understand and diagnose nail health when treating future clients. On a nail course, students will also learn how to complete manicures, pedicures and nail extensions, all of which take training to perfect.

Hair

Hairstyling is not just as simple as washing and cutting hair! Students enrolled on a specialist hair course have the opportunity to learn hairstyling techniques, bleaching/colouring, chemical treatments and much more. Students can also learn about specific hairstyles such as bridal, fashion, media and television. Students learn from specialist hairstylist with many many years of experience and usually still working in the industry.

Beauty Therapy

There is a growing demand for therapists trained across all aspects of beauty offerings. This, in turn, has lead to a surge in colleges offering beauty therapists courses. Learners enrolled in a beauty course can expect to learn about nails, brows, lashes, skin and massages.

A Beauty Therapist course is great for many reasons as learners can see which route they most enjoy. As a qualified beauty therapist, students can offer all treatments increasing their revenue and market share. Finally, after completing a beauty therapist qualification, many students go on to opening their own salon! The options are endless due to the number of skills these courses teach.

Is it Easier to Get a Job After Studying at a Beauty School?

In all honesty, the answer is YES, but it is all down to the beauty school you choose. The learner should ensure that their chosen school is committed to providing them with employment opportunities. These opportunities come in the form of practical experience, workshops, product training and recognised tutors.

Practical experience for a student wanting to pursue a career in beauty will set them apart from competitors within the industry. By completing their training within their courses on fellow students, learners ensure they get their mistakes out the way. The consequences of making a mistake on another student versus a paying client are very different. A mistake made on a client can lead to the detriment of a beauty therapist’s career. Whereas getting these mistakes out of the way under the supervision of a tutor and classmates ensures the student doesn’t form incorrect habits.

Another benefit of studying at a beauty school for a learners’ career would be product training. If the student is attending a good college, the school should have a partnership with beauty brands. By completing product training with popular beauty brands used in salons, students will stand out. Employers will see them as already ahead as it reduces the amount of training they will need.

Finally, learning under experienced tutors will put a beauty student in the best position to succeed. Students can expect experienced and qualified beauty experts who will guide them in the right direction as their tutors.

An experienced practising tutor ensures that the students are learning the most modern and up-to-date techniques. Learning up-to-date techniques makes the transition from studying to working more seamless for students.

How Long Will I Study at a Beauty School?

The length of your course depends on the course you choose to study, the beauty school and the Level. Beauty courses can range anywhere from 6 weeks to 43 weeks.

If a course is more advanced and in-depth, the longer it is likely to take. The increase in length is due to more learning material needing to be covered. When a course offers practical training, it will take longer to complete as there will be a mandated set of hours for students to complete before they can get their certification.

Regardless of if a person is naturally blessed with eyebrows or has to use products & tricks to fill out their brows. Makeup is ever-evolving, and there is no harm in learning how to do something better, so here are 4 tips that will transform your eyebrow game.

Eyebrow Hack 1: Using The Right Products for Your Eyebrows

Our first of the 4 eyebrow hacks may seem simple, but there are many different products for eyebrows suited to different needs. Makeup these days is more accessible, there are so many brands offering a range of products suited to the varying needs of the consumer. Right now, There are great eyebrow products that are found in the drugstore or with high-end retailers/brands. It is down to the buyer to do their research to find what works for them and their brows. Different products have different uses and benefits.

With thousands of products out there, consumers may feel overwhelmed in knowing what to choose. Before choosing a product straight away, it is important to know the difference between different eyebrow products.

There are seven main types of eyebrow products:

 Pencil

Let us start with pencils that are best suited for softer natural-looking eyebrows. Eyebrow pencils are great for filling gaps in the eyebrows, creating asymmetric eyebrows, and filling sparse eyebrows.

Powder

Brow powders are great to fill in gaps and more sparse areas. When applying the powder to your brows, an angled eyeshadow brush is the best for filling in the brows in a controlled manner. Using other brushes may cause the powder to cake up on the eyebrow. The powder is ideal for a softer look, but people with dry skin should avoid this method.

Pomade

Pomade is very similar to powder in its purpose and how it’s applied. It is the product behind the “Instagram Eyebrows”, which are eyebrows that are super defined and dramatic. Those looking for a natural eyebrow look should stay away from pomade!

Markers

Markers are ideal for creating individual eyebrow hairs. Eyebrow markers are often confused with a felt-tipped liquid liner, but their primary function is to cover up scars and bald spots. Many MUAs will use markers and eyebrow powders together to create natural-looking eyebrows without too much emphasis on the hair. For people with oily skin who live in hotter conditions, markers are a better solution as they can withstand both factors. Many makeup artists opt for using markers as they are known for their long-lasting benefit. To get the best application, use short strokes with light pressure across the eyebrow, in the direction of hair growth.

Gel

Eyebrow gel is great for naturally enhancing the eyebrow as the brush shapes the hairs. The gel itself will hold the hairs in place or even add colour to the eyebrow. For someone who has fuller eyebrows, this is the easier solution because they may just want something to hold the hairs in place rather than using excessive products. Most makeup artists suggest using a spoolie to brush up the eyebrows in their natural shape and then backcomb the eyebrows with the gel afterwards.

Wax

If the gel does not work for taming unruly brow hair, eyebrow wax is a stronger alternative. Wax works as a base for eyebrow powder, great for people whose hair grows rapidly and in different directions.

Colour Fillers

Brow colour fillers offer different colour eyebrows for anyone and everyone. For example, if someone dyes their hair red, they can match their eyebrows to their new hair colour. It can come as a pomade or as mascara.

Eyebrow Hack 2: Beginners Try an Eyebrow Stencil

Nowadays, the emphasis on eyebrows has only been increasing. Many people online are teaching the newest techniques to help consumers keep up with what is current. For someone who is beginning to learn how to do makeup or wants more practice doing them, eyebrow stencils are great for experimenting. Brow stencils are usually made out of plastic and are flexible to the shape of the face. They provide the shape of the eyebrow for the consumer, and the consumer needs to fill in the outline. Think of it like adult colouring!

When using an eyebrow stencil, you should first apply eyebrow wax to prepare the eyebrows for shaping and keep the product on longer. Line up the stencil over the natural eyebrow to ensure that the eyebrow will come out true to the shape of your face. Stencils have lines that indicate where the eyebrow should arch and where it should end. Next, the main eyebrow filler should be applied (it can be any of the other six mentioned in hack one). Once the eyebrows look like the consumer desires, that is the finished look!

Eyebrow Hack 3: Find The Best Eyebrow Shape for Your Face

Everyone has a different face shape, and what may work on one person may not work on the other. If you can identify your face shape, then it is easy to frame your eyebrows correctly:

Eyebrow Hack 4: Eyebrows Are Sisters, not Twins

Many people have a preferred eyebrow. It might have a better length, arch, or it is easier to do. There is a multitude of reasons why one might look better than the other. Most eyebrows do not match, and people usually use makeup to improve the symmetry of their eyebrows. A popular saying to remember “Eyebrows should be sisters, not twins”.

We’re not telling you not to create balance though! Just remember that they do NOT have to be identical! Science even has our back on this one. Eyebrow expert Tonya Crookes explains that “Each brow has a different muscle movement.” She also continued to say that “Sometimes this is caused by what side you’re sleeping on, the muscles on one side weaker than the other, sometimes it is due to how you naturally show expression.”

Have you recently completed training as a makeup artist and now looking to market yourself as a makeup artist and welcome some new clients? Then look no further than social media marketing! Wherever you turn on social media, people are marketing themselves, their skills and hobbies. As social media continues to grow, there are more ways for freelance makeup artists to create and promote their ability.

Social media is the new standard in the makeup industry, with consumers engaging and interacting with businesses every day. Despite the billions of people using social media, customers won’t automatically come to an account they do not know of. To get these clients and followers, your account must be attractive and unique to retain the people viewing your business page.

So let’s get into how you can use social media to market yourself as a freelance makeup artist. But firstly, let’s get into how social media has impacted the makeup industry and MUAs.

How Has Social Media Changed the Makeup Industry?

Expressing Services to Potential Clients

When social media first started, it was a platform that people used to stay connected with family & friends. Some would even use it to even keep up with what their favourite celebrities or sportspeople are doing. However, as time has gone on, small business owners have seen the marketing benefits of social media. Platforms such as Instagram are full of makeup artists, sharing their creations with consumers who may want to hire them in future. Social platforms have made makeup looks, trends and experiences more accessible for consumers. Clients can now see a variety of their skills before they buy or book.

Consumer Buying habits

Consumer buying habits have also changed drastically since the rise of social media. The majority of brands are now creating products that are either very affordable or inclusive. Although, a higher percentage of consumers are buying cosmetic products/services based on what influencers are pushing to them or what is currently trending in the overall makeup industry.

The digital makeup industry is more dependent on co-creation between brands and makeup artists, influences and creators. Social media allows a two-way conversation in which consumers can give back feedback that actively affects the market. Makeup consumers benefit from finding out about products quickly, as many brands send PR packages to influencers for them to review it/share their opinion. This way of communication makes it even easier for the consumer to decide on purchasing.

It is also no longer just about products either! Consumers are interested in learning new techniques that will better their makeup application skills.

Creating Trends

Social media in recent years has been driving trends within the industry, with some trends even starting on social media due to the popularity of makeup influencers. User-generated content is on the rise and showing no sign of slowing down. To be recognised and grab momentum of the trends, makeup creators tend to respond faster. Responding quickly and putting their spin on these trends will gain them recognition.

Why Should you Market your Makeup Business on Social Media?

Most people who use social media use it as a leisure activity or connect with friends and family. At the same time, social media is a great visual tool, and there are lots of apps that facilitate content creation straight on your phone. These apps also make it easier for beginners to start taking advantage of social media’s marketing benefits.

Makeup artists are fortunate in the sense that their craft is visual! For example, a bride is looking to hire a makeup artist, and friends suggest a few MUAs to her. The bride can easily go to social media to check out the work to see how capable the different makeup artists are. When they find the right MUA for them, they can email or call directly from the app and discuss their requirements with the makeup artist.

In an alternative scenario, the consumer has come across a makeup page and found a look that they want to be recreated on their face. It’s also very beneficial to the makeup artist because they know that they can complete the look.

As visual artists, there is absolutely no reason why you should not be on social media, as the medium enhances and emphasises visuals in different ways. Marketing online also comes with much creative freedom. That is how a lot of artists build a strong following with eye-catching visuals. A good Instagram page can help Makeup artists get brand recognition and collaborations and build their online presence.

How Do I Market My Makeup Business?

Best marketing ideas for makeup artists on social media?

Clients do not naturally gravitate towards a new business, the makeup artist has to be proactive. You have to make a conscious effort to promote your business to new clients. If they are aware that you are in demand, they are more likely to come to you. Even well-established brands know the importance of advertising and promotional activities.

With makeup being a visual art form, there are many ways to showcase a visually pleasing portfolio online and market yourself as a makeup artist:

Business/Creator Page

It is better to separate personal social media from your makeup page. Promoting solely as a makeup artist is more effective, and it looks more professional. Therefore you should keep the content that is being posted strictly to makeup. You will also avoid the issue of consumers misunderstanding what your services are.

Additionally, the personal life of the makeup artist may not align with the brand image and voice. There is no harm in having fun or showing a bubbly personality but remember these are your potential clients and not your friends.

Platforms like Instagram and Facebook give users the option for a business or a creator profile type. A creator profile is great for those just starting to get the same benefits as a business page.

Different Social Media Mediums

The objective is to expand social reach on platforms where your potential clients are. The social platform you choose to use should be based on your target audience rather than what you are comfortable using. For instance, Tik Tok & Instagram are more suited to content that is instant whereas YouTube can suit both short and lengthier content.

Popular platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and Tik Tok provide great spaces for makeup artists because your pictures and videos are shared with thousands of people. Followers are not the metric to be concerned with, your engagement is more important. Someone can have 100k followers and only 1% is engaging with them, but someone could have 400 followers and have 100 people actively engaging. To successfully market yourself as a makeup artist, remember to regularly create relevant and exciting content to be shared across your chosen platforms.

Consistency

Consumers are great at consuming content, so posting often and consistently is key! All social media platforms come with insights that help you understand the demographics and habits of your followers, which is an advantage. Trial and error are essential to understanding when your followers are active. Some platforms have different features for sharing different types of content. Creators should utilise these features together as engaging with the other users on the platform itself.

Hashtags Expand Reach

Most platforms nowadays have hashtags to help users find content specific to that tag. So if someone is looking for a makeup artist in London, they might search #mualondon or #makeupartistslondon and so on. The aim is to target the people who are looking for the service the makeup artist is providing. Overusing hashtags can lead to posts not being seen by the right audience, so the key is to use niche specific hashtags. There are many different ways to strategise, so you must research how to be able to use hashtagging efficiently and effectively.

Contests and Giveaways

Finally, Everyone enjoys a good freebie! But remember to do giveaways that align with your brand. For makeup artists, there are many different examples of giveaways they can do: photoshoot with a free makeover, free makeup kit, makeup brushes and so on. It is necessary to take advantage of the influx of followers that a giveaway will bring by engaging them. You may find that many will unfollow once the giveaway ends, but the ones that stay should prove worthwhile!
