As we welcome warmer weather, it is the best time to remind you of the importance of sunscreen! Whether you are in the house all day or outside basking in the sunlight, SPF is your skins’ best friend. The sun is at its strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Even elements such as water, concrete, sand and snow still reflect sun rays and increase the risk of sunburn.

Why is Wearing Sunscreen is Important?

In the most recent years, there has been more and more emphasis on the importance of wearing sunscreen. Using sunscreen daily is a necessary part of a healthy skincare routine, regardless of skin colour and type.

Avoiding unnecessary sun exposure also promotes better-protected skin that will age well.

SPF is an acronym standing for Sun Protection Factor, a measure of how effective the sunscreen is against UVB rays. Despite UVA rays being more well known, they aren’t in the rating. Skin experts recommend using sunscreen that has a rating of at least SPF 30 and higher. Sunscreens above SPF 50 will only provide a smaller increase in UV protection.

Regardless of using a high or low SPF, they both last the same amount of time on the skin. Dermatologists recommend reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours for the highest level of protection. Reapplication is vital because sunscreen is easily washed off, even through sweating throughout the day. However, if the sunscreen is not applied correctly, the SPF will be less effective.

What are The Benefits of Wearing Sunscreen?

Wearing sunscreen comes with many benefits, which explains the importance of sunscreen. The main one is it protects you from the harmful rays the sun produces. The sun produces two types of rays that can be harmful to the skin, UVA and UVB. Both have different adverse effects on the skin as well. UVA rays can prematurely age the skin, whilst UVB rays are responsible for sunburn. Sunburn indicates UVB damage to the skin. The immune system is responding to the damage, producing sunburn as a warning. The warning is that DNA damage is happening inside the skin cells due to UV radiation.

When the skin is overexposed to both UVA and UVB rays, it can cause skin cancer. Another benefit of using sunscreen is that it is the first line of defence against skin cancer and premature ageing. Skin cancer experts have confirmed using sunscreen can reduce the risk of skin cancer by 40% approximately. UV rays can also damage your complexion and cause hyperpigmentation, discolouration and change the skins’ texture. However, reapplication is essential to reap these benefits. The more often the skin burns, the higher the risk of skin cancer (melanoma) increases.

Sunburn can present itself through the peeling/blistering of the skin after sun exposure or if the skin has permanently turned pink or red. For people with more melanated skin, it may also present in the skin with symptoms such as irritation, itching or tenderness. When these signs appear, it is necessary to cover up and limit sun exposure. Doing so will stop any more damage to the skin. Sun lotion will only help the skin to feel better after a sunburn, but it cannot reverse the damage that has already occurred.

So, in summary, the benefits of applying sunscreen are:

What Should You Consider When Choosing Sunscreen?

A decision on what sunscreen to use is quite important because all sunscreens are suitable for different purposes. There are two types of sunscreen: physical and chemical. Physical sunscreen means that the sunscreen acts as a physical barrier against the sun. The sunscreen contains fine minerals (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) that stay on the skins’ epidermis. They mainly reflect the sun and partly absorb UV radiation.

Chemical sunscreens protect by absorbing UV radiation to prevent skin damage and premature ageing. However, different chemicals have different purposes. Chemical sunscreens also have higher concentrations of chemicals to break down and absorb the harmful rays from the sun.

Significant factors to consider when choosing a sunscreen is down to factors such as:

For example, a swimmer is spending a lot of their time in the water outside. They should use sunscreen that is water-resistant so that they can be protected against the sun while swimming. Alongside sunscreen, it is vital to have complementary sun protection such as wearing sunglasses (which help protect the eyes from dangerous UV rays), limiting prolonged exposure in the sun and wearing protective clothes (which shield skin away from the sun).

How to Choose Sunscreen Based on Skin Type?

In regards to the skin type factor, different formulas are more suited to particular skin types. Someone that has dry skin should use sunscreen that provides additional moisture. Lean towards sunscreen creams that have ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides. Someone who has oily skin should look for a water-based or gel formulated sunscreen. Natural ingredients, such as niacinamide, tea tree oil or green tea, will also benefit those with oily skin. These ingredients help control oil production in the skin and make sure the skin is not overproducing it.

Alternatively, people with normal skin do not have to worry too much about ingredients. Although, most consumers prefer organic sunscreen because of its texture and the lack of white residue left on the skin. For people with sensitive skin, there are numerous ingredients that they must avoid. Alcohol, fragrances, mineral oils, parabens and many other types of acids can be harsh irritants to the skin. Opting for a mineral sunscreen that contains minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are less likely to irritate the skin. There are ingredients that sunscreen for sensitive skin that help soothe the skin and reduce irritation like panthenol and allantoin.

Where to Buy Sunscreen in The UK?

The best places to buy sunscreen are from trusted pharmacies such as Boots & Superdrug. Supermarkets like Tesco & Sainsbury’s and well-trusted retailers. Buying from trusted retailers prevents buying replicated or diluted products that may damage the skin.

In short, when looking for sunscreen, consider:

You’ve decided that you want to pursue a career in the beauty industry and are wondering how to choose a beauty course? You’re unsure what route you want to go down without limiting yourself? Or maybe you want to update your skills and looking for the best beauty course to do that?

But… how do you know which is the right beauty course for you?

We’re here to help! We’re giving you some tips that we use to help prospective students choose the right beauty course for them!

1) Knowing your Passion Helps to Choose the Right Beauty Course.

That sounds like the best place to start, right?

Before you can start looking at courses, you should know what area of beauty you are interested most interested in pursuing. Are you looking to become a nail technician, facial massage, skincare expert, or a well-rounded beauty therapist?

It’s easy to think that most roles within the beauty industry are similar though they are all very different.

What does a Nail Technician do?

The nail industry seems to be ever-growing and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. This growth is definitely down to the creativity and increased skills of nail technicians. Being a nail technician is more than just doing painting nails. You should know the hygiene, health and safety laws behind doing nails. A good nail tech can recognise nail disorders, the anatomy and physiology of the nail.

What does a facial massage and skincare expert do?

A facialist or skincare expert assists their clients in bettering their skin and treating their problem areas. These skin problems can include but are not limited to acne, rosacea, dry and textured skin. Those who study skincare will learn skin theory and skin analysis teaching them to address these issues. Whilst many of us have a strong interest in skincare, it is only with proper training can you become qualified to practice skincare and facials on others.

What does a Beauty Therapist do?

As a Beauty Therapist, you are able to offer a variety of treatments:

Learning a variety of beauty treatments puts students in a better position for employment as they’re competent across beauty practices.

From the list above, you can see the importance of knowing your interests before you choose a beauty course!

2) What are the Types of Beauty Schools to Choose a Beauty Course?

Now you know the area of beauty that you want to qualify for, what kind of school should you complete your beauty course?

Colleges:

If you are a school leaver, this might be the best option for you. Straight after you complete your GCSEs, you can enrol in your local college. A lot of colleges now offer beauty courses for students between 16-18. The benefits to these are that they are usually government-funded, so no cost to you! However, most colleges can’t offer practical beauty training due to larger class sizes and lack of facilities.

Studying a beauty course at College is worth it if you are unsure of what you want to study after school. They also help students learn the theory elements of the beauty industry.

Private Beauty Schools:

Whilst at first, they can seem expensive, we recommend this route for those committed to working in the beauty industry. You will quickly make the costs back once you enter employment.

These schools more often have an on-site salon that students can practice inside, ensuring you learn the practical elements. Students will also find that class sizes are smaller, allowing for more contact time with tutors. Finally, students will learn more relevant and modern treatments as courses are designed by beauty teachers rather than an awarding body with no beauty experience.

Choosing A Beauty School 1

Regardless of what type of beauty school you choose, ensure that the courses are accredited! Reputable beauty schools will offer beauty courses that are accredited. The awarding bodies to look out for in the beauty industry are VTCT, CIBTAC, and CIDESCO. These certifications are longstanding and internationally recognised. So, remember that when looking to choose a beauty school.

You should also arrange a tour of the schools you are interested in just to make sure it is the right fit for you and meet the tutors beforehand.

3) Check the Course Modules are right for you

The different courses can promise you the same end goal, but they do not take the same route. Doing your research on what the different schools offer will help you focus on what you want to gain. You might find that some beauty courses focus on the practical elements whilst others concentrate on theory.

Experience is everything when it comes to beauty training and will most likely help you find employment quicker. However, learning the theory side is just as important to ensure that you practice safely and correctly. Look for courses that offer a balance between both practical and theory-based learning to guarantee you are getting the most out of your course!

4) Know What your Requirements are From the Beauty Course

When enrolling for a course, they always talk about their requirements from you. But what are your requirements from the course, school, and tutors?

Maybe you’re currently working and looking for a part-time beauty course? Or you want a course that will allow you to become qualified in a few months so you want a fast-track beauty course. If you already have some training in the beauty industry and want to develop, you should look for a course that will teach you the latest beauty innovations. Ask about the machines you will be learning on, how the school is keeping up with new industry practices. At the end of the day, you should know what you want to achieve from your beauty course and find the right program that meets your requirements.

5) Be Passionate about your Beauty Course

There is a stigma around vocational courses such as beauty. We often hear that they are easy to complete. This belief could not be farther than the truth. Beauty courses require a strong interest to complete as there is a lot of information to take in. If you are not determined, it is easy to fall behind and not achieve high grades – you don’t want that!

As with any training, there is a lot of studying to be done, inside and outside your school. Having a strong interest in your chosen subject will guarantee you put in the time and effort needed to succeed.

The beauty industry is a highly competitive and large market. If you choose a reputable school, a certified course and succeed in your chosen course you are putting yourself in the best position to do well! We hope these tips will help you choose the right beauty course for you!

Student Feedback on CIDESCO Beauty Training

What is your name?

My name is Mileidys Leal Trapaga

What course were you studying at The London School of Beauty & Make-Up?

I was in the Cidesco course, the second-best decision I have done in my life!

Why did you decide to take the course?

I chose The London School of Beauty Make-up, first for the location. I am not from the UK, but the Academy had good transport facilities (buses, underground, bike). Being in Barbican meant being in the centre of London, and I could access other places easily.

What were you doing before the course? What is your background? What are you doing now as a career?

I studied the VTCT Level 2 Beauty Therapy Qualification a couple of years ago. Then I found out the most prestigious qualification for a beautician is CIDESCO, so I said at that moment, I want that.

Before the course, I was working as a beautician in Spa Hilton Nordica in Iceland for over 2 years. My specialties were as a Makeup Artist and Sports massage therapist. Funnily enough, I am still working in Hilton Spa but in beauty. It is different now that I am CIDESCO qualified. My technique, client communication, beauty knowledge, and my confidence are 200 %. My tutor Trisha always said CIDESCO is the best, and I can now confirm.

What are your aspirations and ambitions for your future? Your career ambitions? For example, where do you want to be in 10 years?

My aspirations are simple, first is to get better and better, every single day, professionally and personally. My clients will get to see how professional I am, and I can treat them effectively using all the treatments I have learned. Of course, I would like a better salary and open my Skin Clinic or Spa after 2 years.

Have you found the course to be useful?

I cannot describe how useful this course is we studied everything we need to know for life and more. We learned about diet, skincare, anatomy, cytology, and more.

What did you think of the course instructors?

My sweet tutor Trisha is the best! She is a book full of all the knowledge you need. I do not have the words to explain the beautiful person she is. I’ve always said that even after 30 years, I will remember my CIDESCO Tutor, Trisha. Where I live my friends know about her because I have spoken a lot about her.

Would you recommend The London School of Beauty & Make-Up to your friends?

Of course! 100%! I recommended LSBM to my friends and everybody!

Would you recommend the CIDESCO course you did to your friends & why?

I have recommended this course to my friends for all the reasons I’ve talked about before. The opportunities with this diploma are fantastic.

What would you change about the course to make it better, or what do you think future students would benefit from?

I would not change anything about the course, for future students I would recommend practicing with a real model for makeup.

If you are interested in finding out more about our CIDESCO qualification starting on the 6th September 2021, then get in touch today! Our friendly enrolment staff will be able to answer any further questions you might have.

As Spring approaches, we can look forward to brighter days, fewer layers, and the fresh Spring air. For most people, Spring is the perfect time to declutter their homes and lives however, many of us will often forget to spring clean our beauty and makeup products.

Well, the staff at LSBM is here today to give you some Spring cleaning tips for your beauty and makeup products.

Beauty Spring Cleaning Tip 1: Throwing away Expired Products

We’ll remember to throw away expired foods and drinks but often forget that foundation we have had for over 2 years.

“BEAUTY & MAKEUP PRODUCTS EXPIRE!!”

It’s time for us to part with those old tubes and replace them with brand new products. With most of us working from home over the last few months, there has been less of a need to wear makeup. It is easy to forget about that mascara we opened before lockdown, which is now probably a breeding ground for bacteria.

Beauty Products Expiry Symbols
Look out for this symbol to work out your beauty products expiry dates.

Wondering how to work out the expiry dates for your makeup and beauty products? On the back of your product, you should see an opened jar symbol with a number. The number identifies how many months after opening the product, the manufacturer advises using it. After this point, there is a high risk of bacteria growing and, you don’t want that on your face! Now you know how to find expired products, time to figure out what belongs in the bin or back in your bag.

Beauty Spring Cleaning Tip 2: Wash your Makeup Brushes

So speaking of bacteria building up, makeup brushes can be another hotspot! Think of all the dirt, oil, and products that have built up on the hairs of your brushes. Experts say that you’re supposed to wash your brushes once a week! While we understand that not everyone has the time to do that or even use them frequently enough to warrant that.

Our expert makeup tutors recommend that you take the time to wash your brushes as frequently as you can! We know that many companies would tell you to rush out and buy expensive brush cleaners. You don’t need to!

Course Headings And Quotes

1) Wet your brush bristles with lukewarm water.
2) Use gentle soap and pour it into your palm.
3) Massage the bristles gently into your palm and soap.
4) Rinse out the brush bristles and squeeze out the extra water.
5) Dry out the bristles without a towel and hanging over an edge so that they dry in their correct shape.

And there you have clean makeup brushes to slay that Spring makeup!

Beauty Spring Cleaning Tip 3: Reorganise your Beauty Products

So at this point, you’ve cleared out all the expired products and cleaned your brushes. You now have a good idea of your inventory which makes reorganising a lot easier. Disinfect your makeup bag/makeup drawers before putting your products back in. Before doing that, use this time to put away your winter products! The heavy-duty creams and intensive hydrating formulas can be stored away, instead of taking up space in your makeup bag. Grab the lighter formulas, bright palettes, and fresh lip colours.

So now, you are all set for Spring! Are you interested in more makeup tips why not find out more about our MASA Courses? Or if transitioning your skincare into the different seasons is more your speed, our facial courses are one of the best in the UK!

On the 22nd February 2021, the Prime Minister has announced that schools can resume on the 8th March 2021. With this news, The London School of Beauty & Make-Up will be opening back up our doors and classrooms!

The announcement is delightful news for both staff and students at The London School of Beauty & Make-Up as it hints at a return to normalcy. While we have done our best to move ongoing courses to online learning, nothing compares to having students back in classes.

Classroom adjustments

We want to inform students, returning and new students alike, our classrooms have been adjusted to meet government guidelines. These adjustments are to keep students and staff safe while in the building.

The modification includes practices that have been in place since our reopening in July 2020, with a reduced number of students in practical workspaces and classroom bubbles. All students and staff are required to wear the correct PPE at all times around the building and during lessons.

When completing practical studies, you will have to wear face masks, gloves, and visors, and can not practice without this equipment. Students and staff have to keep their masks on at all times in the building. These changes are in place to ensure that we are not contributing to the spread of the virus.

The beauty industry is one that is underpinned by enforced hygiene, health and safety practices. These high standards in health and safety are taught and practiced throughout all of our beauty and makeup courses. These standards ensure that upon completion, students can enter the beauty and makeup industry with the most up-to-date knowledge of health and hygiene habits within the workplace.

Those that are enrolling onto our VTCT beauty courses will have to complete a prerequisite Covid-19 awareness course. This is the VTCT Level 2 Award in Infection Prevention for Beauty Therapy and Nail Services. The course prepares learners for the reopening of beauty salons and providing treatments safely in a sterile and COVID safe manner. For CIBTAC and CIDESCO courses, students will have to complete the CIDESCO Sanitation and Sterilisation Award.

Course Start Dates

In other news, based on this announcement, we have confirmed all of our start dates based on these guidelines. As always, in these times, dates are subject to change based on government guidelines.

Courses yet to be completed should be receiving communications regarding their continuation date. Please look out for emails, and if it is not urgent, wait for communications to be sent. Currently, our emails are very busy and we may have sent out information before reading your email.

Last week, we announced that we would be launching an online makeup course! You can now learn makeup artistry from your home! Students from all over the globe can take advantage of the prestigious learning environment at LSBM.

Our MASA Courses are renowned worldwide for their thorough scope of teaching makeup artistry. None of that would be possible without our experienced and talented makeup department.

In today’s blog, we want to introduce you to our senior makeup lecturer, Jolanta Sewell. We will be talking with her about her passion for makeup and how she started her career.

Have you always been interested in makeup?

I studied art and especially, enjoyed sculpture, painting and architecture. I was looking to find a medium that will combine all of these elements. Translating my creativity into another form of art was my goal and, then I had a eureka moment. I was watching a documentary about Makeup Artists on the film set and Makeup designer on fashion shows. I decided to enrol on to Professional Make-up Designer Course for Film, TV, Fashion and Theatre.

I dedicated 12 months to study full-time and completed my course with a distinction in 2001.

The course allowed me to open the door to many avenues of the makeup industry. Eventually, I grew a new passion for education and training students to become makeup artists. I put my knowledge gained during the 20 years as Professional Make- up Designer and Educator.

What kind of gigs have you done as a Makeup Artist?

In the beginning, I worked at a film school and worked on as many short films as I could. Doing so allowed me to make a name for myself in the industry.

After one year of working on short films, I was referred to work and design makeup for feature films! I completed various looks, which included casualty special effects makeup for actors. I was able to work alongside a team to create weeks of makeup whilst shooting, which was a great experience.

I also worked on makeup for music videos, which helped me network and, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

After working for a while, I had the opportunity to move to Japan for one year. This amazing opportunity opened up the fashion photography side of makeup artistry to me. Whilst in Japan, I contacted photographic studios to work with American and Japanese photographers. Shooting mainly lookbook cards for various modelling agencies and editorial pictures.

When I returned to London, I was interested in working on fashion shows. My first opportunity came, it was to take LSBM Pro team to London Fashion Week in 2015. London Fashion Week was a fantastic experience and, my first year as Senior makeup Educator at LSBM.

What is your favourite makeup style and, why?

I enjoy doing beauty photoshoots and Avant-Garde makeup which are very creative. Both styles offer different elements of the brief. These elements can relate to historical makeup, fashion story and photography styles. I love to research, create and execute makeup that offers a strong reference of past or modern concise look.

In today’s society, when people can learn makeup on YouTube. Do you think going to school to learn makeup is important?

You can be inspired by youtube creators and their content but the learning process is different. You need to have hands-on experience which working in a group enhances greatly. A school also helps to learn the process of creating instead of copying. Learning about yourself and gaining people skills is another form of makeup artistry that goes along with your practical skills. Possessing natural talent in makeup artistry is rare. Enhanced and developed creativity with guidance combined with the passion you already have will set you apart in the industry. You might surprise yourself by what you can achieve with additional knowledge and determination.

Why did you become a makeup artistry tutor?

It was a natural progression through the makeup artistry path that I had chosen many years ago. I was inspired to join makeup artistry as a career by many great teachers. I always knew that I would end up teaching.

What is your favourite part about teaching?

The moment I see my students progressing! Sometimes they aren’t even aware that they improved. Their faces light up, like a mini revelation as they now believe in their capability. I can see them translating their skills into a well-established career!

What makeup product could you not live without?

Mascara! It adds a great definition to any look.

If lockdown has taught us anything, it’s the importance of self-care. We’ve noticed an increase in demand for our beginners facial course.

Why a Beginners Facial Courses?

By undertaking a beginners facial course, you will learn everything about the skin! From the theory of skin to understanding how to analyse and treat different skin types.

There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all when it comes to facial treatments. Everyone wants a healthy, glow and, knowing what your skin requires will help.

The Different Skin Types Learnt about on a Beginners Facial Course

Skin Types Learnt about on a Beginners Facial Course

Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, then you know the difficulties of keeping it moisturised. This skin type is lacking in natural lipids and oils, which leads to dehydration and flaky skin.

Exfoliation is key to removing flaky skin! A facial that incorporates gentle exfoliation will benefit you immensely, with increased circulation and smoother skin. Exfoliate gently though, to not irritate your skin!

Once you’ve exfoliated, hydrate your skin with essential oils that penetrate deep. Once your facial is complete, say hello to smooth skin.

Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, you probably read the dry skin part and thought I wish. Oily skin produces more oil than needed, which can block pores leading to acne.

A facial that incorporates a chemical exfoliant such as glycolic acid will help penetrate the pores, removing excess oil. Deep cleanse are needed every so often with oily skin but not too often that you strip your skin of natural oils. Stripping your skins of oils will cause you to have oilier skin.

Combination Skin

When you have skin that is both oily and dry, others might think you have it all! In reality, it’s harder to treat.

Microdermabrasion facials work great to gently remove excess dirt and oil across the t-zone. Finish the facial off with a hydrating mask to balance the skin’s natural PH. By the end, you should have a face that feels smooth and hydrated all around.

Sensitive Skin

People with sensitive skin like to stay away with facials as they can aggravate the skin. However, it doesn’t have to be so! You can still enjoy a facial whilst being gentle on the skin. Facial products that have enzymes are a great choice for exfoliation, without irritating the skin. Avoid products that have fragrances, opting for natural and organic ingredients instead!

Mature Skin

Maturer skin types can be all of the above. As skin ages, cell production slows down and, the skin begins to lose elasticity. The lack of elasticity leads to wrinkles and fine lines. Those with mature skin should opt for treatments enriched with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to brighten the complexion. Vitamin E and collagen are brilliant ingredients for anti-ageing facials and help tighten the skin resulting in younger-looking skin. Those with mature skin may want to concentrate on areas such as the forehead, the eyes and mouth area.

Why not take your skincare to a professional level and join a beginners facial course?
